Project Runway – Season 11 Episode 2 – Recap – Spin Out via Rickey.org
Here’s the recap for Season 11 Episode 2, “Spin Out”, of Project Runway on Lifetime!
So the teams stayed the same this week, which I think makes sense. The contestants need some more time to become acquainted (so they can start to HATE each other).
This week had the designers at Spin NYC, an underground Ping Pong Bar owned by SUSAN SARANDON (of all people!). The challenge is to redesign the current Spin uniforms for servers and ball boys. They need to look fashionable and exude the fun and upbeat environment that is SPIN NYC! The slogan for the bar is, “Balls are our Business”. This should be incorporated in the ball boy uniform. Each team will create 5 looks. They will have 3 female models and 2 MALE models (Cue the OOOOOO’s and AAAAAAAh’s). Male models….THANKS HEIDI and TIM! The budget is $500/team and they have 1 day to complete the design. Winners get their uniforms in all SPIN locations.
Designers are given the opportunity to work for a little while as servers and ball boys to experience the tasks and responsibilities of the employees at Spin.
I like that this challenge is forcing teams to collaborate and create more of a collection. After 30 minutes of meeting as a team and sketching, teams are sent to Mood to buy fabrics and supplies. The problem is, Team Keeping It Real, wasn’t able to keep their minds on the task during their 30 minute meeting and are now SCRAMBLING to figure out who is going to create what.
Dream Team has picked up some steam since last challenge and are working like a well-oiled machine. They divided the tasks, delegated the different components and chose the people that would be best fit (as a group)! I have a feeling they are going to ROCK it. #Dreamteamftw
Ben is becoming a pain in Cindy’s arsssse and he is starting to get on my nerves too! He needs to back off and let Cindy do her THANG to see if she can stand up to the competition. She finally tells him to back off and let her do her own thing so she can make her design happen.
In the work room, Team KIR (Keeping It Real) can’t finalize an idea to save their lives. As for Dream Team, Ben is getting involved with EVERYONE’s designs to “not let his team be the losing team once again” (sounds like a dumb move to me). James from DT (Dream Team) is setting is OWN sail and is on his way to being a castaway on his own island. His team doesn’t get him and are struggling to wrap their minds around him as a designer. Daniel is helping Layana with the shorts as he mentors her with her design. I LOVE DANIEL and his Papa Bear personality! NO DESIGN SCHOOL FOR PAPA BEAR! These two make a great couple both on and off the runway, if only Layana was a “bear” too
The designers are able to use a screen print for this challenge, which brings in an extra dynamic (that I am certainly intrigued by). They can use it to incorporate the logo and slogan wherever they think it would fit into the design of their piece.
Tim comes to give his critiques and Dream Team is looking pretty screwed. Their pieces don’t work together and their choice of jeans as a ball boy uniform seems dated and not urban in any way. Back at the drawing board, the designers start regrouping to figure out how they can “Make it work”!
Day 2 brings a rush to the finish. Cutting, sewing, printing, NON STOP!
Susan Sarandon is the guest judge this week! So…Let the judging begin! As the uniforms come down the runway, it seems that the Dream Team is looking ok overall, some hot pieces and not-so-hot pieces. Team KIR had some STRONG pieces to anchor their collection as a whole and Susan even commented how much she loved their ball boy uniform as it made its way down the runway.
The judges score the designs as they come down the runway and once they tally their scores, the winning team is…..Team KIR!
The Top Three Designs:
Daniel and Layana
Daniel says he has immunity, so Layana should win if their piece is chosen.
Susan likes the female server design and thinks it’s practical and sexy at the same time. Zac loves the formality of the male tee shirt. Heidi thinks it’s cute and sexy, but not overly sexy. Nina sees the charm in the “skort” and loves its dark color and practical details.
Stanley
Nina thinks it’s edgy, fun and futuristic, yet retro. Susan says its a strong and sexy look. Zac loves the anlged pocket and Heidi loves the drop-crotch pants that “all the boys are wearing”.
Joe and Richard
Heidi loves the ball boy’s uniform. Zac likes the play with typography. Nina thinks the team as a whole did a great job collaborating!
The Bottom Three Designs:
James
James is in the bottom three again.
Nina thinks the length of the capris are disturbing. Heidi doesn’t think a male server should wear a tank because of their hairy pits (HAHAH EWWW).
Ben and Cindy
Heidi thinks the look resembles a receptionist somewhere at a hotel. Susan says it seems a toned down version of a posh party outfit. Zac doesn’t think it’s an appropriate outfit for the venue or occasion. Nina thinks it looks dated.
Ben opens his big mouth to say he was the leader of the group and was too busy checking in with everyone else instead of worrying about himself.
Ben and Matt
Susan thinks the kilt is “ballsy” (pun intended). Zac likes the gender bending, but there is too much going on in the outfit. Nina appreciates the provocative nature, just not for THIS challenge.
Final Results:
Winner- LAYANA Her uniform will be worn by workers at Spin NYC. #skortsarethenewblack
Loser- James… sorry to see you go (NOT!)
In closing, here are my final thoughts:
The Dream Team is not so Dreamy after all! Cindy is hanging on by a thread. Hopefully, next week she will be revamped and pull out a big win for her team! As for Team KIR, I am in LOVE with Daniel and his ability to be a teacher and mentor to bring his team to another win!
The previews of next week’s episode promises to bring craziness and DRAMMMMA! Sayonara BEN? Here’s to hopin’…
